The case of the San Antonio Spurs isn't quite as curious as Benjamin Button's, but it's still pretty tough to figure out.
It feels like the preseason narrative for this team has been the same for a solid four or five years, "Now, they're definitely too old to make another run."
We're coming up on seven years since the Spurs' last title, and they were a veteran team then. And yet, they continue to dominate.
After comfortably beating the young Washington Wizards 92-79, the Spurs are now 8-1 and in the midst of a six-game winning streak. San Antonio's won as many games straight as the second-place and 6-2 Portland Trail Blazers have won total.
Obviously, the keystone to San Antonio's success over the last couple years has been Tony Parker, but let's talk about Tim Duncan for a second. He's 37 and still has a player efficiency rating near 20. Last season, he finished at 24.4.
We might need to enlist Shaggy, Scooby and the gang to investigate, because something spooky is going on with Duncan. He should be declining. In fact, he should've started declining years ago. But he's not.
Another big part of the equation in San Antonio is the organizations ability to find young assets other teams undervalued and Gregg Popovich's ability to develop those youngsters and sell them on specific roles.
Aron Baynes (undrafted in 2009) started the play, Nando de Colo delivered the assist and Jeff Ayres (castoff from Portland and Indiana) finished it. All three are rotation players for the Spurs this season and all three will be effective. How do I know that? Because they play for the Spurs.
It's a team that will never, ever stop being good.
